Lasik Surgery : Is there an age requirement or age limit for Lasik Surgery?

Most countries have an 18 or 21 year-old age minimum for lasik surgery. It's also strongly recommended that your eyes prescription should have been stable, unchanging, for at least two years prior to lasik surgery, to demonstrate that the shifts commonly associated with growth have finished.

I’m sure that lasik surgery, regardless of the state in which it is performed, is only for those patients at least 18 years of age or older. This is because your eyes are still changing, especially during your teenage years and puberty. One of the prerequisites is that you have had a stable for at least a year or more. When you are a teenager, your eyes are going through some of the biggest changes, which would make the lasik surgery unsuccessful anyway. That's not to say that on your 18th birthday they will perform the lasik surgery with no questions asked. There is still a rigorous pre-testing procedure that they must put you through to make sure that you meet the other requirements for being a perfect candidate to lasik surgery. Even if you are 18 years old but might still have an unstable prescription. When they do the work-up, you will be refracted by an Optometrist to see how your eyes have changed since your last exam. Generally, for most people, their eyes have stabilized by 18 but under certain cases, some people may take a little longer.

During stressful times we can learn incorrect vision habits which squeeze our eyes out of shape and give us blurry vision. Because artificial corrections (glasses, contacts, lasik surgery) do not deal with how we use our eyes, we can increase our prescriptions during other stressful times. Increased prescriptions lead to more and more tension and strain on the eyes. This tension squelches circulation to and from the eyes. The eyes get starved of nutrition and are unable to get rid of wastes effectively. Note for most people this is not a malnutrition issue, because of the squelching of the eyes they can be eating very well and their eyes can still be starving and over taxed because of high prescriptions and incorrect vision habits.

Think you are too old for lasik surgery, think again. There is no upper age limit for lasik surgery. A 73 year old or even an 85 year old is not automatically denied for lasik surgery if your eyes meet the criteria.

Most prevalent criteria for lasik surgery

-   At least 18 years of age.
-   Eyes must be fully developed, this may not happen until after 21.
-   No eye infections or injuries for at least a year.
-   Must be able to stare at a fixed object for 60 seconds.
-   Your vision prescription must be stable for 1 year. A change of 1 diopter or more in 12 months is significant.
-   No history of herpes infections in the eye.
-   Scar free cornea.
-   Not nursing or pregnant.
-   No dry eye syndrome.
-   Not affected by an autoimmune disorder. (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes, HIV or AIDS)

Lasik Surgery : Introduction Of Lasik Surgery

Introduction of Lasik Surgery.

Lasik surgery or Laser Surgery (refractive surgery) is surgery procedure to correct vision problem such as farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. LASIK stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. The eye surgeon uses “ultraviolet laser technology” and “microkeratome blade” to reshape the front of your eyeball. The front eyeball which is called “Cornea” will be reshaped so that your eye can focus images correctly (20/20 vision). Most people are able to see clearly without their glasses or contacts immediately following the surgery.

Is lasik surgery right for everyone?

Lasik Surgery is not suitable for everyone. Firstly you should do some home work before you proceed with the lasik surgery. Find the “authorized eye surgeon” to scan your eye. You better see several eye experts (ophthalmologist) to confirm whether your eye is suitable for the lasik surgery. You will have confidence by doing that. You may talk to those who have undergone the lasik surgery and ask about their experiences. There are risks and side effects to lasik surgery, so it is best to know what you are getting into ahead of time. Patients with health problems, particularly involving the eyes, may need to postpone lasik surgery. Presbyopia, a condition that requires reading glasses in older patients, cannot be corrected with lasik surgery.

How the lasik surgery works?

Lasik Surgery begins when the surgeon cuts a flap in the cornea. This flap may be created by using a microkeratome blade or an ultraviolet laser. The surgeon then moves the flap, either by using alcohol to float it out of the way or by lifting it with the microkeratome blade. Then, the surgeon removes the tissue underneath the cornea using an excimer laser. This removal or “ablation” reshapes the cornea, allowing for vision more accurate. Once this procedure is complete, the surgeon folds the flap back down for healing.

Lasik Surgery is usually quick and painless. The surgery generally takes about five minutes to perform. You are in and out in a very short time. The doctor anesthetizes the eye with special drops to numb the pain. In most cases, patients experience an immediate vision improvement. Some experience continued improvement over the weeks following the procedure. There are a number of temporary side effects including problems with night vision, sensitivity to light, glare, halos, starbursts, decreased night vision and dry eye syndrome. Recovery period may be varies since some patients recovered in longer time.

Lasik Surgery is a solution for correcting your vision problems. Furthermore, you don't bother to wear glasses or contact lenses anytmore. In addition, you get your natural appearance back. Wear glasses, sometimes can change your appearance, pretty person might look “not really pretty” when he or she wears glasses. However choose the right glasses can maintain your prettiness and some glasses can even lift up your looks.
