Most countries have an 18 or 21 year-old age minimum for lasik surgery. It's also strongly recommended that your eyes prescription should have been stable, unchanging, for at least two years prior to lasik surgery, to demonstrate that the shifts commonly associated with growth have finished.
I’m sure that lasik surgery, regardless of the state in which it is performed, is only for those patients at least 18 years of age or older. This is because your eyes are still changing, especially during your teenage years and puberty. One of the prerequisites is that you have had a stable for at least a year or more. When you are a teenager, your eyes are going through some of the biggest changes, which would make the lasik surgery unsuccessful anyway. That's not to say that on your 18th birthday they will perform the lasik surgery with no questions asked. There is still a rigorous pre-testing procedure that they must put you through to make sure that you meet the other requirements for being a perfect candidate to lasik surgery. Even if you are 18 years old but might still have an unstable prescription. When they do the work-up, you will be refracted by an Optometrist to see how your eyes have changed since your last exam. Generally, for most people, their eyes have stabilized by 18 but under certain cases, some people may take a little longer.
During stressful times we can learn incorrect vision habits which squeeze our eyes out of shape and give us blurry vision. Because artificial corrections (glasses, contacts, lasik surgery) do not deal with how we use our eyes, we can increase our prescriptions during other stressful times. Increased prescriptions lead to more and more tension and strain on the eyes. This tension squelches circulation to and from the eyes. The eyes get starved of nutrition and are unable to get rid of wastes effectively. Note for most people this is not a malnutrition issue, because of the squelching of the eyes they can be eating very well and their eyes can still be starving and over taxed because of high prescriptions and incorrect vision habits.
Think you are too old for lasik surgery, think again. There is no upper age limit for lasik surgery. A 73 year old or even an 85 year old is not automatically denied for lasik surgery if your eyes meet the criteria.
Most prevalent criteria for lasik surgery:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Eyes must be fully developed, this may not happen until after 21.
- No eye infections or injuries for at least a year.
- Must be able to stare at a fixed object for 60 seconds.
- Your vision prescription must be stable for 1 year. A change of 1 diopter or more in 12 months is significant.
- No history of herpes infections in the eye.
- Scar free cornea.
- Not nursing or pregnant.
- No dry eye syndrome.
- Not affected by an autoimmune disorder. (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes, HIV or AIDS)

You should obtain a specific list from your surgeon or ophthalmologist of lasik surgery.
